I'm really sorry, Jim. I've lost so many family and friends to cancer (I guess by now we all have) and it's not just sad, it's enraging. Helplessness is not something we humans are terribly good at accepting- maybe men even less than women. Women seem more comfortable around death somehow- or maybe it's just with the business of death we are better.

Of course what you CAN do about it is be there for him and his wife. And it sounds as if you are.

I know how you feel. I lost my best friend in 1997. He was like a brother since we first met in High School. He survived a frag grenade in Viet nam and all sorts of death-defying experiences until he met up with a skinhead nazi punk. He was shot 15 times at close range with a fully automatic assault rifle. This happened in Denver.

(Still doesn't affect my view on the medical profession or firearms.)
