We had a discussion about Littleton at my Unitarian church today and I said exactly the same thing. I said it was a wonder more young men don't go nuts in the suburbs and kill people. I mentioned the escape valves of running out West, or going to sea- which are no longer available. I can think of no more claustrophobic existence for young persons, especially testosterone laden young males, who crave adventure, or have that teenage death wish so many adventurers seem to have, then to be locked in the suburbs where rules of conduct are deadly dull and the sameness can kill you- if you don't have a rich interior life you would go mad (and DO many teenagers have rich interior lives? NO- they wear their internal organs inside out, their viscera are exposed to the world, they have no skins yet, and their rawness (which imo is like a soft pupating insect- changing from larvae to adult) makes them both vulnerable (to strange ideas) and dangerous (because they have no idea that their ideas are strange, but that this strangeness is normal in teenagers and that these ideas are only passing fancies- and that the person they are today will fade, and change into the very thing they are rebelling against- they fail to realize they will, eventually solidify into adults- ah the irony of "My Generation").
