Rande Is: Regarding Global Crossing (GBLX)

I am already long in GBLX and intend to hold. Frontier will (IMHO) not be interested in QWST; it has synergies with GBLX which would require a significant premium above QWST's current offer to make it worth considering. I'm not sure whether U.S.West is a good fit with either, however.

QWST - Some interesting speculation has appeared in the last two issues of Interactive Week. I thought I would pass some of it along.

First is a quote from Christine Heckart, sr. VP at consultant TeleChoice: "I honestly am perplexed, Joe Nacchio is a much smarter person than I am, so I know there's an excellent reason for this deal - I just don't think we've heard it yet."

Business Editor Kimberly Weisul has a "RumorMeter" where she usually lists a few items rated on a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being most likely. In the 6/28 issue Qwest dropping out of the running for Frontier and US West is given a 7. (As a comparison the Fed raising interest rates is a 10.)

There is also some wild speculation about larger deals that may unfold - like a QWST and GBLX alliance. Or something bigger involving BellSouth, which not too long ago purchased 10% of QWST and has an option to buy another 10%. Apparently QWST consulted with BellSouth before making the offers.

Today QWST strengthened an alliance with NT

And, a few minutes ago Frontier agreed to meet with QWST to talk about the offer
