I am not a literary critic or aesthetician. I think he meant that for him, when he perceived beauty it represented not a mere surface appearance, but something real, eternal, outlasting human thought. Similarly, when he perceived that kind of unquestionable permanence, it struck him a beautiful. He was suggesting to us, his readers, that we might try to think that way too.
