I read this article yesterday. It is not by a regular Barron's writer. I only note this since the article is poorly written, and almost impossible to understand with regard to the duration of "bubbles." Is the author suggesting a 20 year or a 52 year bubble for turnpike trusts, and 33 years for canals???? A span of 48 years (1825-1873) for railroads? The article is so garbled that it's impossible to tell. The Internet boom may or may not be nearing an end, but this ill-researched drivel from a Barron's freelancer (shame on you, Barron's!) provides no clues as to the answer.
