Sorry for the missunderstanding. ATHM has chosen - I assume for cost reasons to use a single 6Mhz channel for a neighborhood - sharing the 30 mb/s (QAM64) among potentially 100's of simultaneous users. They could go back and add more capacity, more QAM modulators, etc. There may be operational reasons which make the upgrade difficult but it is technically possible. As for VOD - apart from the non trivial business issues - adding VOD to the ATHM service would involve more then just added QAM channels - they also need the server and video storage management capabilities to be integrated into their server operation. In other words they need to partner with a VOD vendor such as CCUR or SEAC (or, perish the thought, DIVA) to pull together all the pieces. Unfortunately, I believe that ATHM's access rights deals with the larger cablecos specifically withhold VOD services. Major Cablecos want to control that valuable VOD real estate. I would expect that AT&T would try to include ATHM in any VOD planning for their cablecos - simply because WEB applications are starting to cross over into broadcast television now and moreso in the future. Anyone designing or planning a VOD service needs to seamlessly integrate the WEB into it.
