A question on fuel efficiency.

On their website, Global Thermoelectric lists a goal of 60% basic efficiency for their SOFC. I am not sure how PEM efficiency compares to SOFC but I am quite sure that any 'real-world' internal-combustion engine has far less than 60% efficiency due to cooling and other losses. Adiabatic engines couldn't be included because any non-theoretical internal-combustion engine needs some sort of cooling system IMHO.

Check out the following link to the Global Thermoelectric (GLE) website, which provides excellent information about their SOFC.

I am interested in learning what sort of efficiency is obtained by either type (PEM or SOFC) when a reformer is used.

Again, check the link for SOFC information. No reformer is necessary for SOFC operation, SOFC can accept hydrocarbon fuel directly. PEM on the other hand must use pure hydrogen as a fuel, or it would need a reformer to convert another fuel to pure hydrogen.
