Jay,

Will Sears carry a line of digital cameras as well?!? It seems a bit odd to me. I wonder how much they made on retail sales of the Packard Bell line of PC's? Maybe the TV/videocamera/VCR department will incorporate digital cameras into their product line?

Jay,

I recently read that CompUSA is having financial trouble. Part of the problem with retail outlets depending on software sales is direct marketing and the availability of internet downloads from the software companies themselves. Also, bundling of software with a hardware purchase likely detracts from software sales. I question why CompUSA hasn't tried to set up sections of the store dedicated to high margin or high volume products. They have squeaked all the digital cameras into one crappy little display and make it difficult to "touch and feel" them. Usually the batteries are almost dead and there is no PC interface to preview captured images. Forget even trying to find a salesperson with a pedestrian understanding of the devices. They must think these things are going to sell themselves and that Joe SixPack is going to plunk down $400 bucks on something he has not even test driven.

Also, CompUSA's difficulties are also too bad for Lexar. It is one of the few retail outlets where they have a shelf presence (along with Viking and PNY and SanDisk). I guess CompUSA felt it would be more efficient to stock cards from 3 or 4 different manufacturers rather than forming an alliance with a market leader.
