To say nothing of the fact that the winners write history. If the South had won the War Between the States a very different version of its origins, justifications, etc. would now be taught in Virginia!!

What I "love" is reading newspaper stories about events which I attended, especially those at which I spoke. I think the deep embarrassment I feel when I sit down after speaking is caused not only by the imperfections of my speech, but by the sorry hash I know the students' notes or newspaper stories that will be written about it.

I love reading actual historical events as they unfolded in the newspapers of the day too. One must be aware of the prejudices and slanting that occur even in "non-editorial" writing, but much of it is quite useful when compared to the massive rewrites and revisions of history infecting many of the educational textbooks today.
