Actually, I think we may be using the word "mythos" somewhat incorrectly, Lather. The dictionary defines "mythos" as the complex of attitudes, beliefs, etc., most characteristic of a particular group or society.

I would submit that what we are talking about here are myths (understood not in the dictionary sense, but in the sense of "symbolic interpretations of one aspect of reality"). People are quite capable of believing in a variety of incompatible myths simultaneously.

The most relevant example I can remember is a space engineer I once knew, who was convinced that Revelations was literally true, and that the Second Coming was just around the corner. So although he may have abandoned one "myth" since then, he is probably still holding on to the other.
