If you Yahoo! Quotes and chart the SPX, the high gain was + 17. So, it was bad data on CNBC.

Challo: It looks like window dressing to me also from what little I have seen today. I have been too busy to watch closely. Keep your eye on the volume. We should be at around 600 to 650 million today which is awful. Without the big guys, the last hour should be roughly 150 million NYSE shares. The last half-hour should be less than 90 million NYSE shares.

Anything stronger than that with a move-up is suspicious. Once the big money commits, things will move quickly. Of course, there may not be any commitment at all. That is what makes this watch so frustrating.
