Philip Morris to Provide More Than 1 Million Meals to the Elderly In All 50 States

$2 Million in Grants by Nation's Largest Food Company Will Eliminate Waiting Lists and Support Meal Programs

CHICAGO, June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- At the annual conference of the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs in Chicago, Philip Morris Companies Inc., in partnership with the National Meals on Wheels Foundation, announced a funding initiative that will provide more than one million meals to feed elderly Americans over the next year.

The company's Senior Helpings initiative is part of The Philip Morris Fight Against Hunger and has awarded $2.1 million in grants to 56 organizations in 50 states and the District of Columbia. The grants will eliminate waiting lists for meal deliveries to homebound senior citizens, expand services for frail seniors at risk of hunger, and provide emergency food supplies during severe weather.

Studies show that hunger, particularly among elderly Americans, continues to be a major national problem. According to the most recent survey of 30 cities released by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 1998, requests for food assistance by elderly persons rose an average of six percent last year, with 67% of the cities reporting an increase.

''We created the Senior Helpings program to support innovative, yet practical solutions to the growing national problem of hunger among the elderly,'' said Stephanie French, vice president of corporate contributions and cultural programs, for Philip Morris Companies Inc. ''As the largest corporate funder in the fight against hunger in America, we want to do our part to help the most vulnerable populations among us, especially frail senior citizens.''

Among the organizations receiving Senior Helpings grants announced today are:

James River Senior Center in Jamestown, ND, to supply frozen meals to more than 1,000 at-risk seniors living in remote locations for one year.
Adult Community Center in Sedona, AZ, to set up a breakfast club for seniors that will provide a five-day supply of breakfast foods delivered once a week for one year. This meal will supplement daily lunches.
New Opportunities for Waterbury Senior Nutrition Services in Waterbury, CT, to take 45 homebound seniors off the waiting list for a year.
Neighborly Senior Services in Clearwater, FL, to eliminate a waiting list of 120 seniors through the purchase of a food delivery vehicle.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that Philip Morris has eliminated the waiting list for more than 1,000 frail homebound senior citizens in New York City and the second year that the company has made grants to remove seniors from waiting lists nationwide. Overall, the grants announced today will feed more than 12,000 people for an entire year.

''We are grateful for Philip Morris's continued leadership in the national fight against hunger,'' said Connie Benton Wolfe, executive director of the National Meals on Wheels Foundation. ''Their generous support will literally put more than a million meals on the tables of thousands of frail elderly people across the United States.''

Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the National Meals on Wheels Foundation promotes public awareness and support of senior nutrition programs across the country and helps them build a strong base of financial and volunteer support.

Philip Morris Companies Inc. is the nation's largest corporate funder in the fight against hunger. In 1999, the Philip Morris family of companies -- which includes Kraft Foods, Inc. and Miller Brewing Company -- launched a four-year, $100 million campaign to combat hunger. The Philip Morris Fight Against Hunger initiative includes $50 million in cash contributions and $50 million in food donations. It is believed to be the nation's most ambitious corporate response to this pressing social issue, which affects as many as 35 million Americans, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Philip Morris Companies Inc. has five principal operating companies: Kraft Foods, Inc. (comprised of Kraft Foods North America and Kraft Foods International); Miller Brewing Company; Philip Morris International Inc.; Philip Morris Incorporated (PM U.S.A.); and Philip Morris Capital Corporation. The Philip Morris family of companies is the world's largest producer and marketer of consumer packaged goods.
