However, unlike AMD, with a monopoly position in the industry and overwhelming development resources, Intel has no excuse.

Merced is ALREADY delayed by 6 months. It was originally supposed to ship towards the end of 1998. And if you seriously think that Merced will ship (in commercial quantities) before the end of this year (before CuLaterMine, no less!) you must be smoking some serious wacky weed.
