Free ICQ/AOL Web Email - 4:22 PM EST - TK
AOL will offer free web email to its 35 million ICQ users later this year by working with email company, Critical Path. Microsoft's Hotmail division plans to fight back by developing their own instant messenging service. The fun is just about to start.

The company's ICQ instant messaging service is developing a World Wide Web-based e-mail offering in partnership with e-mail service provider Critical Path. ICQ already is promoting the expected launch of the service on its site, accepting e-mail addresses from users who say they want to be notified when the ICQ-branded mail service becomes available. The move into e-mail highlights the apparent collision course between ICQ and Microsoft's Hotmail service as they both position themselves as integrated hubs for online communications. Even while ICQ prepares its move into e-mail, for instance, Microsoft is developing its own instant messaging software that will be promoted to Hotmail users. Meyer declined to say how many users have preregistered for the e-mail service. ICQ now has 35 million registered users worldwide, about 7 million of whom use the service daily. Roughly 14.5 million users tap into ICQ at least once per month. - ZDnet
