Thanks for the reply.

Your reasoning is credible although, IMHO, you left out the fact that LU is already holding hands with the companies that will most likely be the largest spenders in the Internet buildout, while CSCO is trying to stick its foot in the door. The LU microelectronics division could turn out to be an underappreciated asset to the company.

Good luck,

Clay

Gary,

You don't like LU for IP? LU is on it's way.

Have a great day.

Telefonica Selects Lucent Technologies As Its Strategic Supplier For New, Global IP Network

Telefonica Data to Offer the Most Advanced Broadband Network Services Including Voice Over IP, Data and Other Corporate IP Based Services in 15 Countries Using Lucent's Latest Internetworking Portfolio

Lucent Will Implement the Network as a Turnkey Project

June 29, 1999 05:45 AM MADRID, Spain, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Telefonica Data has selected Lucent Technologies as its strategic supplier for the design and installation of an IP-based multiservice network that will deliver a range of advanced IP-based communications services to business customers in 15 countries throughout Europe and the Americas. The new, worldwide network will be centrally managed from Spain.

This network will make Telefonica one of the first operators to offer multimedia and sophisticated Internet services, such as voice over IP and Interconnect services for ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to business customers across Latin America and Europe. At the same time, it will broaden Telefonica's extensive services portfolio for customers in Spain.

The value of the project, which extends until 2002, could reach US $200 million depending on the growth of demand for IP-based services in the various countries where services roll-out is planned. Telefonica will begin network deployment in Brazil and Chile later this year.

"This multiservice network will allow Telefonica to bring sophisticated IP services -- such as virtual private networks and voice over IP solutions -- to the Latin American marketplace," said Guillermo Fernandez Vidal, CEO of Telefonica Data. "We were looking for more than just hubs and routers. In Lucent we found someone who supports our future network vision with the latest technology and advanced services. We are working jointly on the design of this single, global network, creation of services and integrated management which will give us a leadership position in the next-generation of communications networks."

Lucent is providing a wide range of broadband, multiservice technology from its newly formed Broadband Networks and InterNetworking Systems groups, which were created following the company's merger with Ascend Communications which was completed last week, on June 24, 1999.

"This project clearly underscores Telefonica's leadership in its globalisation efforts. Lucent is offering a complete network solution, global market vision, and providing the same high quality service in 15 countries," stated Carlos Mira, president of Lucent in Spain. "Lucent not only has provided a solution that encompasses a global architecture and market vision, but is managing the total integration and operation. We believe this network will help Telefonica lead and grow the information society in Latin America."

Lucent's technology solution

Lucent will provide Ascend's acclaimed multiservice product range including the MAX TNT multiprotocol wide area network (WAN) access switch which enables service providers to offer a variety of access services such as analogue, ISDN, leased T1/E1, and Frame Relay. It is also providing the B- STDX family of broadband packet switches which enable service providers to build the next-generation network to offer the most advanced services such as voice and virtual private networks over IP

This IP-based network design uses intelligent switch routers in place of traditional routers to avoid bottlenecks in Internet access. Lucent's OneVision(TM) Management Systems and software will provide an overall management and control function for this multiservice network. In addition, the Lucent Technologies Softswitch, formerly known as the PacketStar IP Services Platform, will enable Telefonica to offer value-added services on its IP network with SS7 interconnection, which allows network integration and feature transparency between the PSTN and IP networks.

For highly robust user-based security, the Lucent Managed Firewall will give Telefonica a more secure network. Lucent's high-performance QIP Domain Name Services (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers will network administrators to define primary and secondary directory services servers.

Telefonica, Spain's flagship telephone company, is the largest supplier of telecommunications services in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world. Through its affiliate companies in Spain, Latin America and the United States, the Telefonica Group services a market of more than 300 million customers.

With US $19.117 billion in revenue for 1998, Telefonica is one of the world top ten telecommunications companies. It is also Spain's largest company in terms of profits, assets, market capitalisation and employment.

Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronics components. Bell Labs is the research and development arm of the company. Further information about Lucent Technologies is available on the worldwide web at lucent.com.

The migration of cicuit to packet and maintaining the revenue stream will be a pain for LU.

No it wont. That's why ASND bought Stratus. That, in turn, was another good reason why LU bought ASND. ASND has been working very closely with Stratus for some time now to develop a seamless IP gateway. Didnt your lame duck CSCO just figure this out last week? CSCO has NO migration products. That's why there will NEVER be any core CSCO crap in the big guys networks. CSCO had the chance and blew it, again.

with narry a care in the world about the impact on older technologies and infrastructures.

You also have a lot of customers with legacy CSCO systems that you wont support any more that are really pissed off. One thing customers never forget is when a vendor screws 'em and laughs all the way to the bank. Upgrade, what upgrade? You got to be kidding!
