But real estate is also an investment. What we have there is a transfer of paper equity from real estate to paper equity of stocks. This is why the stat is meaningless. I never forget one morning I saw Maria B. on CNBC read that stat, snap her thong, smile and say "This is because we are a nation of INVESTORS, not SAVERS." People will interpret what they want out of it unless the "savings" is clearly defined. Again, the only thing anybody can make a point out of this is if they compare personal debt vs net worth....
