El, Note the second consideration. -- Continental President Declines Chance To Become Compaq's CEO June 28, 1999 6:47 PM NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- In a possible setback to Compaq Computer Corp.'s high-profile search for a new chief executive officer, Continental Airlines Inc. President Gregory Brenneman Monday announced he withdrew himself from consideration for the job. Brenneman, 37, who is also the chief operating officer of the airline, said he prefers to remain at Continental. Brenneman, considered one of two front-runners for the post, confirmed he had been involved in talks with Compaq for the top job at the Houston-based computer giant. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Compaq (CPQ) had already entered compensation talks with Brenneman. Continental (CAL) paid its No. 2 executive nearly $1.6 million in salary and bonus last year. He also pocketed 550,000 options - up from 90,000 the year before. Brenneman, a former Bain & Co. turnaround whiz, is credited along with Continental Chairman and Chief Executive Gordon Bethune with leading a resurgence of the nation's fifth-largest airline. He has been a candidate for several CEO spots, perhaps none as prominent as the Compaq spot. Compaq's former CEO, Eckhard Pfeiffer, was dismissed in late April as problems mounted for the world's top supplier of personal computers. The Journal reported that Compaq is also considering AT&T Corp. President John D. Zeglis to replace Pfeiffer. But Zeglis was unsure about whether he would be a good fit with Compaq and is reportedly hesitant to move from suburban New Jersey to Texas. Copyright (c) 1999 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
