Spots:

I absolutely agree re the portable/luggable idea. Egghead's retail stores used to carry something similar to what you describe.

But I think you have the right idea - do it yourself. Get a mini-tower case. Put a minimum of stuff in it. Attach a nice solid handle to the top. Put a retractable cord re-winder in it, taken from the broken vacuum cleaner. Find a keyboard that will fit inside the case. Maybe your flat panel will fit in there too.

Get to wherever or even in the Crown Room, take the side panel off the case, plug in the power and the keyboard (small with touchpad attached) and voila, a portable, full power computer. Small enough to carry on the plane, even, and if a bottle of scotch could fit in it, who needs battery power?

Hi, Howard, nice to hear from you again. Thank you

I'm almost to the point of opting for a luggable case with
a standard motherboard. Put a separate flat-screen display in a portable package, another separate reasonably compact keyboard in a portable package, and I bet you could come in under 25 pounds with some serious, upgradable components.

"Brain storming" your idea says you could also connect your separate flat-screen display to a laptop. Many laptops built now have a video output port for use with an external monitor. You can get a laptop with a 433 Megahertz Pentium II processor and a 13.3 inch TFT XGA color display for less than $2500 or a 366 Megahertz Celeron Processor and a 13.3 inch TFT XGA color display for less than $2000. This approach would cost more than your approach, would not be upgradable but would be a lot easier to lug around and set up.

Anybody remember the Osborn Luggable?

Or the Compaq Transportable?
