Great Line in the article,>

‘Our deal with Qualcomm was an asset deal,'' said Persson. ‘‘We're not buying their
whole business ... We have been trying not to take on more liabilities and risks than
necessary.''

‘‘In sort of hushed tones, we have carriers that tell us they would be very interested in putting a [cdmaOne] overlay to capture business if they had an easy way to upgrade switches,'' said Roberts. ‘‘That would be a very lucrative market because Ericsson has been one of the dominant providers of GSM and TDMA infrastructure.''

Finally!!! Confirmation that the carriers dont have their heads completely buried in the sand. This would be the coup de grace if GSM operators began to overlay with IS-95....leading to CDMA2000, of course.

DaveMG--A Most important Post. Thanks much. Do you have a source, time & date? Were this understood (& things usually aren't)and widely published it seems to me like it would fuel the Q pre-earnings price run up. Of course it will help ERICY weather their self proclaimed plateau period.

I saw somewhere where NOK's orders for GSM infrastructure had dropped off sharply in Q1. I bet they received few new GSM infrastructure orders in Q2. It's hard to sell last year's capital eq after a major cost reducing technical improvement.

Is the possibility of a CDMA overlay to GSM an adequate reason for the Voice Stream Omnipoint consolidation? Otherwise why would there me interest in consolidating loosers when CDMA handles 4x the calls of GSM?

If ERICY and others get in a market share war, then end prices to consumers will plummet. Demand will skyrocket. But Q will still get it's fixed ASIC royalty rate.

I think we're all about to "get well" and go to the bank early this year.
