The Texas Instruments press release was most significant to me in that it put e.Digital, Liquid Audio and Franhofer together for the first time. Until now we had only rather vague assurances that the e.Digital playback device would support other compression formats.

While I believe that Lucent has a superior solution, I have been concerned that they would use their size to keep e.Digital wedded exclusively to their format. This news release shows that Texas Instruments is taking the lead to develop the widest possible market for their DSP and that e.Digital will be brought along with them.

It would seem that we now have confirmation that Liquid Audio, (which has previously announced ties to Sony), and Fraunhofer, which controls both MP3 and AAC compression, are working with e.Digital.

Further, the press release makes reference to e.Digital being involved in developing the SDMI "inter-industry guidelines for a secure solution for the digital music market". If you read the SDMI release, note the use of the phrase "creation of a reference architecture".

Put the two together and it I do not think it is much of a leap to assume that e.Digital's design is that "reference architecture"!

We may be about to discover that it is e.Digital, not Lucent, that is holding the keys to a monopolistic opportunity.

The press release certainly presents no roadblocks to a possible Sony link, and with the Liquid Audio connection, I suspect that the likelihood has increased substantially.

Good luck to all.

Jim
