Cramer6/25/99 1:51 PM ET Wouldn't you know it, but the onetime Diogenes of Nike (NKE:NYSE) just damned eBay (EBAY:Nasdaq) with faint praise. And that damning is now filtering through the Net world with extremely negative vibrations. This morning Faye Landes, the influential analyst from Thomas Weisel Partners, started eBay with a watch, that firm's equivalent of a hold. Landes is not just another analyst. Landes is a client's analyst. She is one of those rare analysts that is willing to piss off just about everybody EXCEPT her clients. When Nike peaked a few years back, Landes pulled her buy, saving me and just about everyone else a fortune. She broke ranks with the analyst community, which pushed you into Nike whether it was good or not. She did not fear the wrath of Beaverton. She never feared corporate finance. Now she's been unleashed on eBay, and once again she can't help telling the truth. Despite the attractive business model, she thinks that investors will remain cautious about this company because of its technological vulnerability. She also thinks the stock is expensive. It is the type of common-sense report that the Net has lacked from day one. It is a tough analysis of the real prospects. And it is not as sugar-coated as the Net holders are used to. The result? Under the hard, cold eye of Landes, the stock is withering. I know I sold my small position when she didn't push it. I did it because Landes is a money maker. A demonstrable money maker. I don't want to own what she doesn't want me to.
