I don't understand why making a phone AMPS/GMS/CDMA compatible has to add a lot to the mass. Making it satellite compatible I can understand adds volume/mass/cost, and I think Kyocera had the right idea with it's Iridium "docking" approach that turns a small terrestrial phone into a sat phone as req'd.

Another related question for me is what's the cost and who pays when someone calls you on your G* phone. Having one phone number with you all the time sounds great, but it will be a lot less great if the calling party is charged as if (s)he were calling another planet.
