Illinois Institute of Technology expands in Bangalore Our Bureau BANGALORE, June 28 ILLINOIS Institute of Technology, Chicago, or Illinois Tech, is set to expand its distance learning infrastructure in Bangalore. A dedicated facility is planned here besides a new MBA programme for software professionals. Known in Bangalore as IIT, Chicago, Illinois Tech conducts a Masters in Software engineering and MS in Computer Science from three locations in the city. Today 71 students study at these courses. The first batch of twenty students will graduate later this year. The institute conducts these programmes from Motorola, Ulsoor, Wipro, koramangala and Silicon Automation Systems, Indira Nagar offices. Faculty located in Chicago conduct the programmes over the Internet, live on-site lectures, video-or PC- conferences. Students, in turn, submit projects via e-mail or file-transfer-protocol. Professor Darsh T. Wasan, vice-president & Motorola chair at Illinois Tech, told presspersons on Monday that in 1997 Motorola India Electronics had been invited to offer two masters programmes in Bangalore. Engineers from Wipro, Verifone, Silicon Automation Systems and Oracle had joined the programme. The institute planned to move into a dedicated facility shortly, he said. Course technology would also include streamed video on the internet. On Illinois Tech's plans for an MBA programme in Bangalore, he said ''This course will focus on software management skills. The advantage of American graduate programmes _ the best in the world _ is the critical analytical skills taught in these courses.'' Professor Wasan said students who graduated from the IIT, Chicago courses were awarded the same degree as a student in the US. IIT, Chicago places 95 per cent of its graduates. The illustrious alumni of Illinois Tech include Mr. Sam Pitroda, former technology advisor to the Prime Minister of India; Mr. Jamshed Godrej, Chairman, Godrej and Boyce, Mr. Atul Choksey, CEO, Asian Paints and Mr. N. Shankar, President, Sanmar Group.
