At least with a mainframe it's a fixed TCO over 5 years rather than rolling the dice and having your server go t*ts up for 24 hours (EBAY) costing millions in lost revenue, and unquantifiable amount in customer loyalty.

In your flat-tire analogy, you are partly correct, but using that analogy Mainframe tires are the equivalent of titanium versus the rubber of UNIX. Mainframes were designed from day 1 for running a business whereas UNIX wasn't and is now playing catchup. Granted it's came a long way but it's still a second tier solution when we are looking at the high end or when your talking about running your entire business on a box like EBAY.
