Well, it's actually quite a bit more complicated than this penni. Cats throughout the ages have been very devious, and have managed over the centuries to surreptitiously promulgate the belief that they are too stupid to learn anything more than perhaps using a litter box.

Who, for example, sternly eyeballs an errant puss and mouths with appropriate gravitas: BAD cat!! If you attempt this, you will note that the cat immediately strikes a pose of either vacant cuteness or haughty insouciance, depending upon temperament and situation. When has there been even the slightest implication that the sight of a rolled up newspaper has any impact whatsoever upon a cat's behavior? It is cats' almost theatrical pose of utter numbskullery that protects them from any misguided attempts to make them behave. Trust me, they are not as stupid as they look.
