Q News> Penske, (horselist)> Penske Logistics Delivers Data to Users With Broadcast Agent 5.0 Penske Logistics, a provider of transportation and logistics services for customers like Ford, Kmart, and Whirlpool, has embraced business intelligence technology by extending tools from Business Objects to employees at all levels of their organization. Using a combination of handheld computers, Qualcomm satellite technology, and WebIntelligence, Penske has wired their fleet of 3,500 trucks with technology that allows them to message dispatchers about road conditions, truck location, quantities delivered and picked up, and other relevant information. For example, by analyzing this information with the customer Penske can find "pickup" opportunities from supplying vendors. This might include some new products that the vendor needs for a promotion, thus giving the customer a "cross docking" opportunity. Cross docking is a process where the product gets unloaded from the delivery truck and is immediately placed on an outbound truck to a store or factory. The benefit to the customer is that no inventory charges are incurred and inventory turns are improved. The benefit to Penske is that they get paid for the fuel and mileage since the truck is not running empty. Penske employees who depend on this information on a regular basis can now receive their BusinessObjects and WebIntelligence reports through Broadcast Agent 5.0, the integrated enterprise report and broadcast server from Business Objects. Broadcast Agent 5.0 enables customers to provide personal information broadcasting via email, pager, and fax to their users throughout the enterprise. "We're empowering our whole organization, from the president to the logistics center clerks, with timely business intelligence reports that help us better serve our customers," said Tom Nather, senior systems analyst at Penske Logistics. "With Broadcast Agent 5.0, we can plan for and schedule reports that we know our users will want throughout the day or week. This reduces the stress on our server, and makes our end users happy because they can depend on getting refreshed reports sent to them exactly when they want them."
