Teilhard's theology is, in fact, inconsistent with Catholic dogma. It just plain is, and there's no way around it. So it's no surprise that the Church heirarchy had problems with it.

But they let him continue his work as a paleontologist, which they funded. He was sent to China, where he helped discover Peking man, an early homo erectus.

You might find this link amusing. I did not realize that the Pope endorsed the theory of evolution as being "more than a theory" - which makes the non-Catholic and Catholic creation "scientists" hot and bothered, but for different reasons - some say Peking man is a hoax authored by Teilhard, more of the Jesuit plot to take over the world.
