Sales of new one-family houses in May 1999 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 888,000 according to estimates released today by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of the Census and the U.S.Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 5 (±9) percent below the revised April rate of 936,000 and 1 (±10) percent below the May 1998 rate of 893,000.

Consumer Confidence for June = 138.4%

The Index now stands at 138.4 (1985=100), up from 137.7 in May. The Expectations Index advanced to 114.9 in June, rising from 111.3 in May. The Present Situation Index declined to 173.5, down from 177.2 in May. The all-time high for the Consumer Confidence Index
was 142.3 in October 1968.
