Off Topic: Apologies to the thread.

Lucius:

I guess one's perspective on whether the the bulls or bears are more rude depends on perspective. Mine being the opposite of yours. I could show you a rude and raving bull for every bear you show me.

As for shorts using borrowed money: yes one must borrow shares and post collateral to short and have a margin account to do so, but the use of leverage on the short side is no different that the use of leverage on the long side. You aren't automatically leveraged if you've shorted shares worth less than your assets. In fact, having both shorts and longs in a portfolio, as I do, reduces overall exposure.

Last, I'd argue that yes, it does take a certain persona to be a bear in the midst of this bull market or any market. But at the same time, I don't think there's been a better time to be a bear and I'll miss these days when the bull has run its course. In a bear market we just won't see the crazy speculative runs, unprecedented valuations, and to my mind sloppy investing disciplines that we see today. As a frequent but not exclusive short seller, I think that there's no better time than now to be shorting stocks so long as you pick your targets carfully and with great respect for what this bull market can do if you get in its way.
