X, a very thoughtful post! I do not think that it should be legal at all, but I think that the first trimester case is less clear cut, and I can respect that position, especially if it acknowledges that there is something wrong with abortion, but that it may be justified on balance. In the second trimester, the fact that a human life is growing in the mother is pretty obvious, and the bar of viability is constantly moving lower, and neonatal care improves. Still, I can deal with some arguments for latitude at that point. However, those who defend last trimester abortions, except in the case of medical emergency, are to my mind defending infanticide, and it shames me that this country has lost its bearings to such a degree that it is considered a matter of controversy....
You make good points in your last paragraph. Of course, the only other explanation for the correlation that makes much sense is the explosion of permissiveness entailed by the '60s. However, since the liberalization of abortion laws to the point of abortion on demand is a key component of such permissiveness, it is an excellent place to begin to draw some kind of line. On the other, I agree that there must be a balance which allows for eccentricity and deviation, while promoting social responsibility. To my mind, however, our task right now is to promote core values. Affluence and the urbanization of America have given people a great deal of freedom in lifestyle selection...
