I'm sure that there will be a few minor malfunctions. Perhaps we'll see some sewage in a park like that recent test, or a local autoparts store who can't figure out how many parts he has in inventory. But banks won't lose track of your money, and airplanes won't crash, and the economy won't halt - at least not as a result of Y2K software failures.

My point is that there WILL be some effects, but those effects will be primarily people related more so than computer related, and to the extent that computer problems occur, people will figure out work-arounds fairly quickly. It is easier to guess how computers will behave at Y2K than to figure out how people will behave. I agree also that the chance of a Y2K bear market is a definite possibility, and that many people will stock up on cash prior to Y2K. But I'm not convinced that the effect will permanently disrupt the market, the economy, or the banking system. I do believe that if a severe disruption does occur the cause will be people related, not software related.

I don't think we are really that far apart, and I don't think anyone really knows how people are going to react.

Carl
