Not petty at all. I do it all the time but then I am a Canadian living in B.C., probably highest taxed area in North America, if you consider federal and provincial rates. I agree though. This is artificial and same option should be available to all investors, regardless of domicile. I mean companies get around this by doing a pooling-of-interest mergers so why should the investor be penalized.

May be I should just move to Washington since weather seems to be about the same. Incidentally, Forbes or may be it was Fortune, rated Washington as one of the tax friendly (no state tax) and death friendly (apparently no inheritance tax) states in US.

Pat: Since I follow some of the same stocks you do, including UNPH, you may cross a bridge or two you didn't want to cross, but you are near a few very fine stairways to the sky. When the taxtaker cometh, it is better to be taxed on large gains than small ones, no? You keep more net.

BTW one of the small companies which creates systems using UNPH components (among others of course) is Harmonic (HLIT). If you haven't looked already, it might be worth it now.

Best personal regards, and respect - keep up that research.
