Yougang,

Although AMD's main effort is now on the high end of the PC microprocessor market, it still wants to retain its position in the sub-$1,000 PC.

It would be a terrible mistake for AMD to give up on low end!

They have to say that. With limited fab capacity, they will use as many wafers as they can for high margin production.

Yougang,

<Scumbria: In other portion of the article, Raza said otherwise in regard to low end.

Me thinks both you and Scumbria are absolutely right. It is a question of context. Within 6 months (or less) K7s will show up in the sub-$1000 PCs. So, AMD will not be abandoning the segment - the definition of the segment, however, is a function of time.

Yougang, <It would be a terrible mistake for AMD to give up on low end!>

With the VIA/Cyrix entry, it would be to AMD's advantage to gradually give up the low end, starting with the very low end. For example, only sell chips at the top of the Cyrix speed grade and faster. A kind of "gentlemanly agreement."
