re: Airtouch vs. PCS. Moat:
actually, I did very little research between the two (I know, sounds pretty odd for someone who faithfully follows this thread, but true nonetheless.) Airtouch had the dual-band Thinphone for $129 including case and car adapter with a decent enough plan ($25/month, 60peak_min, 500offpeak_min, 1st incoming minute free, 1yr-commitment) that's all I really need - I'm not a heavy user (yet). They also have good coverage (CDMA in the big cities, AMPS elsewhere, no extra charge when it switches to analog) and no roaming fees throughout WA/ID/OR, which is where I make my calls. So it sounded like a good enough deal...did I do wrong by not considering Sprint PCS?

sheepishly,
-Rose
