Some of the late volatility might be due to to Russell index trading.

Several major Russell indices are being reconstituted right now. Here is the basic schedule (more info available at www.russell.com):

1999 Schedule for Index Reconstitution

June 11: The first preliminary lists of the companies being added and deleted from the Russell 3000 Index will be made available. These lists are subject to change as final calculations are completed.

June 18 and 25: Updated preliminary lists of additions and deletions will be made available.

July 1: The finalized index composition will go into effect.

July 8: Final membership list for the Russell indexes will be available to all investors.
