GT Interactive Software Corp., maker of such popular computer games as ''Deer Hunter'' and ''Total Annihilation,'' said it hired investment banker Bear Stearns & Co. to seek a merger or sale of the company.

It also reported a fourth-quarter loss that was wider than expected. GT said its loss from continuing operations for the quarter ended March 31 was $72.3 million, or $1.00 a share, compared to net income of $400,000, or 1 cent a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue fell 12 percent to $93.5 million from $105.8 million in the year-earlier period.
