Digital Island Announces PaymentNet as Customer for Mission-Critical, Real-Time
Transaction Processing

Business Editors

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 1999--

Growing Online Payment-Processing Service Relies on Digital Island
for Rapid Global Expansion in Key Markets

Digital Island Inc. (NASDAQ:ISLD), a leading provider of network
services for globalizing e-Business applications, Wednesday announced
PaymentNet Inc. as a customer for the secure hosting and transmission
of real-time, Internet-based transaction processing.
PaymentNet, a growing payment-processing service provider to
merchants of all sizes, is able to leverage the performance,
reliability and security of Digital Island's Intelligent Network for
rapid global expansion. PaymentNet is also benefiting from Digital
Island's usage-based billing to save money over fixed-price bandwidth
for its credit card and electronic check-processing services. Given
PaymentNet's fluctuating traffic patterns, Digital Island's
usage-based billing helps PaymentNet save money over flat-rate pricing
where a customer pays for the telecommunications circuit regardless of
utilization.
"Digital Island lets us rapidly reach new international markets
while dramatically improving our financial services in existing
markets compared to our previous network, the public Internet," said
Tony Allen, director of IS at PaymentNet. "The bottom line is that
Digital Island enables us to consistently and reliably deliver a
superior online experience to end users."
"Digital Island's business-critical application hosting and
content distribution services, combined with our Intelligent Network,
provide a competitive advantage for the deployment of financial
services," said Ruann F. Ernst, president and chief executive officer
of Digital Island. "We are extremely pleased that PaymentNet has
chosen Digital Island to be a partner in meeting its objectives for an
effective global presence."
PaymentNet is a leading e-commerce payment-processing service.
The service provides secure, Internet-based transaction and payment
processing for a broad range of businesses that sell goods and
services through a variety of e-commerce media. PaymentNet offers
industry-leading automation and customer care with its
high-reliability credit card, and electronic check-processing
services. The service has been deployed across a wide range of
businesses with excellent results. Notable customers include CBS
SportsLine, EC Direct, Network Solutions Inc., Value America and
Virtual Vineyards.
The PaymentNet service is based on a scalable, secure TCP/IP
architecture that automates the processing of multiple payment
instruments. It leverages the Internet as a virtual private network
between PaymentNet's proprietary transaction processing server and
individual clients dispersed on Internet and Intranet locations. The
service is pre-integrated with many leading "shopping carts" and
integrates easily with e-commerce front-ends of many types.
PaymentNet has headquarters in Pleasanton, Calif., and can be
found on the Web at www.paymentnet.com.
Digital Island(R) is a leading provider of network services for
globalizing e-Business applications serving companies that operate in
multiple countries and need to securely and consistently extend

Calif.; Honolulu; and London, connecting directly into 18 countries

FYI - I found the below in a news article. Nothing fancy, but some quick links to ISLD white papers.

Here's an article I read awhile back. It doesn't mention ISLD, but concerns other possible competing technology for e-commerce content replication.
techweb.com

The one technology that would most directly compete with ISLD would Sandpiper. We reviewed their design prior to ISLD. They are still very small and are mainly only set up for smaller sites... they are not yet ready for the big leagues. Also, their people were very unprofessional and did not have a clear vision of where their architecture was headed.
