SmartMoney pick Cisco Systems said Tuesday that it will buy privately-held StratumOne
Communications for $435 million. The California-based firm makes silicon semiconductor
technology that enables service providers to build next-generation high-speed data
networks. Cisco said the acquisition, which strengthens its existing relationship with StratumOne, will
speed up the rollout of integrated data, voice and video services. Cisco acquired a minority interest in
StratumOne last January.

StratumOne is one of the first companies acquired by Cisco to focus solely on providing a complete
chip-set for very-high speed routing capabilities, says Erik Suppiger of Hambrecht & Quist. The
acquisition is part of Cisco's much larger, longterm strategy to help service providers migrate from Old
World, circuit-based networks to New World packet-based networks, said the analyst. The movement
towards packet-switching technology is part of Cisco's plan to further differentiate itself from more
traditional telecom equipment providers such as Lucent and Nortel, explains Suppiger.

Yeah, but CSCO is not an ASIC/microelectronics company. They are a communications company. Is your position that they should bring all development oriented manufacturing in-house? I think the lower overhead from outsourcing is one of the things that has kept CSCO's margins up.
