invest $200 million in Internet projects in Latin America by the end of 2000, said Charles Herington, AOL's Latin America president.

"Brazil is our priority," he said.

AOL joins industry heavyweights such as Yahoo and StarMedia, which already have tapped Brazil's fast-growing Internet market.

AOL is developing its Portuguese-language services for Brazil in two phases. The company first launched its Web site, which will offer free email and search tools. In a second phase slated for December, AOL will offer Internet access and other services.

The Internet business in Brazil has grown rapidly, with 450 providers and 2.2 million users. AOL also will have to take on strong Brazilian companies such as Universo Online.

Still, AOL's plans are not restricted to Brazil.

"By the end of next year, we are also going to enter the Mexican and Argentine markets," Herington said.
