One last thought. It would seem that buying Sequent is a good fit for both companies. Sequent took NUMAQ about as far as they could from a marketplace standpoint and IBM could always use good business solutions for their customers to back up that expensive and impressive ad campaign.<g>

Ed,

<< KJ-IBM let's go of 1100 people from their storage division and now goes into talks about taking over Sequent which has FC switches supplied by Brocade. Their would seem to be a link between these 2 events.
Is that link a SANs strategy for IBM? Any chance you could connect the dots.>>

No, I can't draw any conclusion from these two events.

<< 1)RS6000 possibly the fastest, most powerful number crunching machine on the planet
with tons of proprietary software. Ask Gary Kasparov.<g>>>

That's the reason may be IBM is looking to strengthen their presence in the unix server arena.

<< 2)IBM with many of it's flaws is still a software powerhouse.>>

Agreed.

<<3)IBM continuing to position itself as an Internet company and possibly the largest business to business e-commerce company(no data to back this one up, but it is clear that is their strategy).>>

If they are not the largest, they are right up there. Their brand name recognition is second to no one.

<<4)Could their SANs(FC) strategy be tied primarily to internet data.>>

I don't think so. IBM has successfully transform from a hardware company to a more service oriented company. They would use the best technology (most of the time, not with Ancor/Brocade's case) to deliver a solution. That's why they use SUN for their server farms.

<<5)IBM very weak in storage.>>

I think this is somewhat of a secret, only known to industry insiders. I wouldn't say very weak, but definitely not strong. The street and average Joe still think they are a powerhouse. IMO the only powerhouse they are still in is 'MAINFRAME'.
