Rory - Great Article - Thank you. Now the chickens are coming home to roost. Clinton enjoyed the political benefits the year of cheap oil had on the broad US ecenomy while Texas and Wyoming who didn't support him paid a heavy price. He sure felt their pain.

Is dumping going on? I don't think so. Maybe Iraq which according to the Simmons article was attempting to wage economic warfare on the US was dumping. I think it more the case that the other aspect of the Simmons article was correct - oil on the trading floor became decoupled from supply and demand. Perhaps it is time to ban the short selling of commodities contracts.

Would I like to see tariffs? It would only boost domestic prices. The oil patch would love it. A sensible foreign policy towards Iraq would have prevented the whole mess from happening in the first place. Bush/Clinton failed to form a strong consensus in the Middle East on how to handle Saddam post Dessert Storm. If you ignore problems they usually just go away.
