FF,

It doesn't seem like the comparison is industry-specific ("large cap"), so the first
stock that comes to mind is Dell. Look what is happening to Dell now that its
amazing growth rate (50%) seems to be slowing to a still impressive rate (30%).

Dell may be comparable to EMC WRT past growth, but comparisons end there. Dell does almost zero R&D and therefore has no IP, intellectual property, to protect them from scores of potential copycats. Heck, the screwdriver shops all over the world now can crank out PCs about as good as Dell's. Dellheads will scream at me about their direct model, close to zero inventory, service, Michael Dell himself, etc. Still, no IP. Dell is trying to change their image right now, same with Compaq, HP, even IBM and Intel to a degree. EMC, OTOH, can concentrate in expanding their product lines and capabilities in storage only for a long time...Enterprise storage, NAS, SAN, software and more RAS. In other words, they don't have to leave their sandbox right now, just expand in their field and protect what they've gained.

One thing that is still bothering me about EMC is that I haven't heard a satisfactory answer about what HP accused them about. That is in the area of RAS and being able to offer NSPF (no single point of failure) in their products. I wrote to them, no answer. Also, there's nothing on their web page even close. Anyone know if they claim this, or are developing it? I have gotten a PM or two saying EMC's storage is the most reliable, regardless. NSPF is not a show stopper to me, IF THEIR PRODUCTS ARE EXTREMELY RELIABLE ANYWAY BECAUSE OF SUPERIOR COMPONENTS AND PROCESSES, but it is an annoyance that EMC doesn't seem to address it.
