> How is it that the Ottoman Empire didn't work its magic on Greece? They took the Balkans and everything around them but their impact is
not seen in Greece? Did they hold out or what?

Apparently the Christian Orthodox priests were instrumental in teaching the Greek children about history and religion despite the brutality of the Ottomans...In 1821, with the decline of the Ottomans, the Greeks finally revolted and beat the crap out of them. I am sure they would love to ethnically cleanse them but the ones who lived just took off running by themselves<g>

There were many Greek refugees in the early part of this century (among them my grandparents). Among them, Turkish influence on food and music are still distinct. There are hardly any Greeks overthere anymore (slowly ethically cleansed). Instead, there is a thriving 300,000 strong Turkish minority in Greece who have their own Congressman in the Greek parliament. They were always used as a bargaining chip by the Turkish govt. as in supposedly being suprresed.

Also, the Greeks were "ethnically cleansed" out of Asia Minor in the early 20s during a ferocious Greek-Turkish war (I think the figures were around 2 million people).
