I am sure that experience can be helpful in many instances. I have experienced anti- semitism, for example, and I am sure that it gives me some better idea of discrimination over all. On the other hand, I will never know precisely what it is like for an African- American, although I have friends and even a sister- in- law who are African- American. But all experience is limited. My sister- in- law grew up in Prince George's County, Md., after it had become a haven for the black middle class. She does not know from experience what it is like to be under a segregated regime, or to live in an inner city ghetto, or to sharecrop. On these issues, she is almost as much of an "outsider" as I am...
