Videologic signs TV set-top box deal
LONDON, June 30 (Reuters) - UK multimedia group Videologic Group Plc said on Wednesday its 3D graphics technology would be used in new Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) TV set-top boxes from Franco-Italian semiconductor group STMicroelectronics .

Videologic shares jumped earlier in anticipation of a computer chip deal with STMicroelectronics. They closed 6-3/4 pence or 13 percent higher at 57-3/4p before the announcement.

Videologic said the new set-top box development platform, codenamed Orion-HD1, was announced by STMicroelectronics on June 14 and was already being delivered to major equipment manufacturers developing next-generation set-top boxes and applications.

Running under Microsoft TV and Sun Java, Orion-HD1 delivers cinema quality audio and video for digital TV and high quality 2D/3D graphics capabilities for new interactive 3D gaming and internet applications.

Videologic said the global market for set-top boxes in 1997 was 6.4 million units. This was forecast to grow to 51.8 million units by 2005.

''This is a major milestone to our objective of making PowerVR the graphics technology of choice in the emerging consumer platforms,'' said Hossein Yassaie, president and chief executive of Videologic.

Videologic develops, designs and supplies 2D/3D graphics accelerator and audio products for PCs, games consoles and arcade entertainment machines.
