I am not sold on the merits of IMing, but I know some people like it. It's good to know that MSFT is still in "development mode" regarding MSN. I think they could do some amazing things with it if they could just clarify and execute a vision.

I hate those IM things, but it's obvious that they're popular enough to be necessary for a portal. IM seems to be one of those things on the internet that caters mostly to the hormonal urges of teenagers -- but that's a market that can't be overlooked. It sounds like the MS offering could be a great addition to the genre since it will use multiple protocols. It could quickly gain an advantage if users are able to combine their lists from AOL, ICQ, and other buddy programs.

I agree that the MSN properties are still in need of a vision. It's a pity they were never able to get the manager they were looking for, but I hope they're over that and ready to proceed. It sounds like the redesigned portal site could give them the chance to unveil a clarified vision for the properties.

At least they haven't given up on promotion. Although I haven't bought a ticket from the site in almost a year, I recently received a nice little promotion from MSN Expedia (the travel agency). They sent a CD travel packet embossed with the Expedia logo. It's a nice addition to my collection of Microsoft-branded promotional products.
