Ben Franklin was a Rosicrucian and the symbology goes way back history when symbolism was used. It was the symbol of the All seeing eye of God. The masonry did have a rosy cross degree so they probably had some masons familiar with the symbol. The best reference book I have found on symbolism is."The Secret Teachings of the Ages," by Manley P. Hall. Symbolism was a means of communication and people oriented in "Orphic Mysteries", can interpret the old symbolism very easily. It is invaluable as a tool for ancient art and engravings.
