Alan,

Let's not delude ourselves here. The Kurd's are the largest ethnicity who do not currently have a geographical country.

There claim on territory extends not in Turkey, but in Syria, Iraq, Iran, part of Armenia, and an enclave in Russia. That's 11 million unloved people living in countries where their goal, just or not, presents a direct threat to their stability.

So let's not just point the finger at Turkey. Saddam loved the Kurds so much he gassed his portion.

Turkey is at a crossroads here with the Kurdish question. Some would say that the Ocalan HAD TO BE found guilty and sentenced to death in order to satisfy justice.

But the sentence still has to be approved by the Turkish parliament and there are numerous rights of appeal (pretty democratic of them, eh??) and thus there is still a chance that Ocalan's offer of acting as a force for reconciliation and peaceful co-existence can still bear fruit.

Regards,

Ron
