The unit, MindSpring Biz, will pair dial-up Internet access or high-speed, dedicated connections-including digital subscriber line, ISDN, and T1-with Web-site design, hosting, and E-commerce tools. MindSpring says it hopes to be a one-stop shop for growing businesses. The company plans to sell packages that segment small-business users by vertical market, says Chris Atkins, director of product marketing. "The hard part about packaging these services together is that the needs of small businesses are very diverse," Atkins says. In October, MindSpring plans to roll out its first symmetric DSL trials in four markets: Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. It expects to offer the service in additional markets by 2000. While MindSpring hasn't set pricing, SDSL access is commonly priced at several hundred dollars per month, compared with $60 to $100 per month for asymmetric DSL service. SDSL offers the advantage of faster "upstream" speeds on data the user sends over the Internet. According to Atkins, MindSpring could eventually use SDSL connections to prepare for the introduction of application-hosting services. Bruce Kasrel, a senior analyst at Forrester Research, says DSL is the "sweet spot" of the small-business market. MindSpring says 15% of its 1.2 million subscribers are small businesses, a foundation Kasrel says it can build on with this offering.
