Added 3rd position in SGI on breakout today. Getting a feeling this one could be getting closer to becoming solvent. . .making it a great takeover target once again. Also, their ownership of MIPS is quite valuable and gaining all the time. . . .and don't forget that for broadband content providers. . . .SGI still makes the fastest video/graphics servers in the world.

Some notes on COVD - A relatively new company, COVD was formed in 1996. It went public in January. It began operating in San Francisco and by the end of 1999 plans to be in the top 51 metropolitan areas. COVD is a CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier) that offers DSL service to a number of major corporations and more than 200 ISPs (Internet service providers). It had been COVDs intention to deal only with business customers but they are now branching out to the consumer market with a DSL service they call TeleSurfer. TeleSurfer, which offers connection speeds of either 384 kps or 768 kps is to be sold through ISPs.

As for growth, Charles McMinn, chairman of COVD was quoted i the June issue of Communications News "...it's amazing to me how much this market has exploded. It's an embarrassment of riches for us, but we can't physically deploy the network any faster."

Intel, AT&T and Qwest have invested in COVD.

Have a grain of salt handy? In April Bear Stearns issued a report on DSL companies. It included this:

"Covad and Rhythms are the clear leaders in the xDSL space and boast
such strategic partners as AT&T, Cisco, Intel, MCI WorldCom,
Microsoft, and Qwest Communications. We would expect the
valuation gap between @Home and the xDSL CLECs to narrow over
time as the xDSL players demonstrate further success in executing
their business plans. Among the xDSL CLECs we think that Covad
and MGC Communications offer the most attractive valuations. "

Merrill did the IPO for Rythms. Now guess who did the IPOs for Covad and MGC?
